New Delhi, April 6, 2026: Amid rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia, the Government of India has assured citizens that the country’s food security and fuel supply remain stable, with no immediate cause for concern. During an inter-ministerial press briefing held at the National Media Centre, officials provided updates on food availability, LPG supply, and ongoing efforts to maintain market stability.
Food Security Under Close Watch
The government confirmed that it is closely monitoring food supply and price trends in light of global uncertainties. Adequate buffer stocks of essential commodities like rice and wheat are available to meet demand under the Public Distribution System (PDS) and for emergency situations.
Officials stated that no unusual price fluctuations have been observed so far, and the availability of essential food items remains sufficient across the country. The government continues to track prices of over 40 key food commodities across hundreds of monitoring centers.
Government Measures to Control Prices
To maintain price stability, the government is prepared to intervene through schemes such as the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS), allowing surplus grains to be released into the market when necessary. This step helps control inflation and ensures affordability for consumers.
In addition, procurement operations for the Rabi Marketing Season (RMS) 2026–27 have already begun, ensuring continuous supply and strengthening reserves.
Edible Oils, Pulses and Sugar Supply Stable
Despite global challenges, the supply of edible oils remains steady, supported by imports from key countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Argentina, and Brazil. Improved domestic production, especially mustard, has further strengthened availability.
Pulses production is expected to increase to 266 lakh metric tonnes, ensuring better availability compared to last year. Meanwhile, sugar stocks are also sufficient, with stable retail prices maintained over recent years.
LPG Supply Normal Across the Country
Addressing concerns over fuel availability, the government confirmed that domestic LPG supply is functioning normally. Over 18 crore LPG cylinders have been delivered to households since March 1, 2026, reflecting uninterrupted distribution.
Online LPG booking has seen a significant rise, reaching nearly 97% adoption, while delivery authentication systems have also improved transparency and efficiency.
Strict Action Against Hoarding and Black Marketing
Authorities have intensified enforcement measures to prevent hoarding and black marketing. More than 1 lakh inspections have been conducted nationwide, leading to the seizure of over 52,000 LPG cylinders, registration of FIRs, and multiple arrests.
Oil marketing companies have also issued notices and taken action against distributors violating regulations.
Energy Supply and Government Advisory
The government has urged citizens to avoid panic buying of fuel and LPG and rely only on official information sources. Consumers are encouraged to use digital booking platforms and consider alternative energy options such as PNG and electric cooking solutions.
Safety of Indian Citizens Abroad
The Ministry of External Affairs is closely monitoring the situation in West Asia and ensuring the safety of Indian citizens. Thousands of Indians have already been assisted in returning safely through coordinated efforts with neighboring countries.
Conclusion
Despite ongoing developments in West Asia, India’s food and fuel supply chains remain resilient and well-managed. With strong buffer stocks, proactive monitoring, and strict enforcement actions, the government continues to ensure stability and protect consumers from disruptions.
Citizens are advised to stay informed through official channels and avoid spreading or believing in misinformation.
