The Election Commission of India has announced that all eligible voters will be granted paid leave on polling days for the upcoming General Elections and By-Elections 2026.
The election schedule, announced on March 15, 2026, includes Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, along with by-elections in eight विधानसभा constituencies across Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Nagaland, and Tripura.

The voting will be conducted as per the following schedule:
- April 9, 2026:
Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Goa, Karnataka, Nagaland, Tripura - April 23, 2026:
Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Maharashtra - West Bengal (Phase-wise):
- Phase 1: April 23, 2026
- Phase 2: April 29, 2026
⚖️ Paid Leave for Employees
As per Section 135B of the Representation of the People Act, 1951:
- Every employee working in any business, trade, industrial establishment, or institution is entitled to paid leave on the day of voting
- Employers cannot deduct wages for this leave
- Any violation of this rule may result in penalties for the employer
👷 Coverage for All Workers
The provision applies to:
- Full-time employees
- Daily wage workers
- Casual labourers
Additionally, workers employed outside their registered constituency will also receive paid leave, allowing them to travel and cast their vote.
