In a major step aimed at enhancing public convenience and improving the experience of highway users, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the removal of the ‘Know Your Vehicle (KYV)’ requirement for new FASTags issued for cars (Car/Jeep/Van category) from 1 February 2026 onwards.
The decision has been taken to address the difficulties faced by millions of vehicle owners who experienced inconvenience and delays due to post-activation KYC requirements, despite having valid vehicle documents.
Relief for Existing FASTag Users
For existing FASTags already issued for cars, KYV will no longer be mandatory as a routine requirement.
KYV verification will be required only in specific cases, such as:
-
Loose or damaged FASTags
-
Incorrect issuance
-
Complaints related to misuse or incorrect vehicle mapping
In the absence of any such complaint, no KYV will be required for existing car FASTags.
Stronger Pre-Activation Verification Measures
To ensure accuracy, system integrity, and compliance—while simplifying processes for users—NHAI has strengthened pre-activation verification norms for FASTag issuing banks:
-
Mandatory Vehicle-Based Verification: FASTags will be activated only after vehicle details are verified from the vehicle database.
-
No Post-Activation Verification: The earlier provision allowing verification after activation has been discontinued.
-
RC-Based Verification in Exceptional Cases: Where vehicle details are not available on the vehicle itself, banks must verify details using the Registration Certificate (RC) before activation, with full accountability.
-
Online FASTags Covered: FASTags sold through online platforms will also be activated only after complete verification by issuing banks.
These measures ensure that vehicle verification is completed before activation, eliminating the need for repeated follow-ups with customers after activation.
Citizen-Centric FASTag Ecosystem
The reforms reflect NHAI’s continued commitment to building a citizen-friendly, transparent, and technology-driven FASTag ecosystem. The changes are expected to:
-
Strengthen compliance
-
Reduce customer complaints
-
Ensure a hassle-free experience for highway users
By placing full responsibility for pre-activation verification on issuing banks, NHAI aims to provide a seamless toll payment experience across India’s national highways.
